Kathy Cummins
Origin: Kathy was created in 1992 along with Arthur, George, Alfred, and Bucky for the “Arthur and George in Blexholm” series. In that particular series, Kathy was a princess of Blexholm’s royal family. She was the love interest of Arthur and often became the target of the antagonists’ evil plots. In a few episodes, she was kidnapped by the evil “Dragon Master” and his henchmen in their attempts to overthrow Blexholm.
In the “Why Bother?” series, Kathy is a country girl from the rural town of Surly, a hick town located in Surly County which is about 100 miles east of Putzburg. Her father, a tow truck driver, is an alcoholic who abused her physically and verbally when she was a child. Kathy’s mother, a hair stylist, also became a target of Kathy’s father’s abuse. Not only was she beaten physically, but she was cheated on repeatedly. She has stayed with Kathy’s father because, as she puts it, “has nowhere else to run.”
Kathy has a close relationship with her maternal grandparents (particularly her grandfather). She stayed with them a lot in order to avoid her parents. Kathy’s grandfather was the one who told Kathy that she should go to Putzburg and “make something” of herself (as he believed that she didn’t have a hope staying in Surly). Her grandparents gave her some money to get started and she got a ride on the next bus into Putzburg.
Days after arriving in Putzburg, Kathy got a job at The Putzburg Ale House. It was there that she met Jill Bedsack. Jill ended up letting Kathy stay with her and the two became good friends. They started going to parties together and that’s how she and Kathy met Arthur and George.
Personality: Despite Kathy’s rough childhood, she remains good-natured and non-judgemental. She is aware that Arthur does bad things and has been trying to get him to change his ways, but she still loves him. She wants to eventually go back to school, but wants to get her life under control first. She currently has an estranged relationship with her father, but contacts her mother once in awhile.
Hobbies: Kathy loves going to bars, clubs, and parties. She also likes painting and drawing butterflies. She also likes hanging out with Jill and doing the same things she does.
Appearance: While Kathy was growing up, her family was too poor to buy her the things she wanted. Now that she has a job and is living on her own, she loves to spend her money buying things she was never able to have growing up. She loves buying trendy clothes, designer make-up, and getting her hair styled at an expensive salon.
